The Internship

Google Bangalore is a great place to be in. We enjoyed a lot there. The fun we had there is enormous. There are about 20 interns along with me from around India. We had a great time there. We have not roamed much in Bangalore except for malls and multiplex's in Bangalore. Finally on the last but one weekend we went to Mysore, Its a very nice place to watch. On last week of the internship we had interviews(The day of the interviews is the most tensed day for me at Bangalore). My first interview took place in the Table Tennis room, which had gone decent. The second one was pretty good. Finally the intership came to an end. The last day we were unable to leave that place. One word to say about Google Bangalore is

"If you want your life to be challenging, there can no better place than
Google Bangalore."

The rest of the semester....

The rest of the semester went on well. I became so lazy after i got the internship. And the laziness went on for weeks and just few days before the final exams realized what going on, and tried to remove my laziness and partially succeeded. And I have done decently in the semester examination. Went home for a week after the exams. Most of my time during the week i spent dreaming about the life at Google. Even though I had some trouble during the journey to Bangalore, I met my friend Adi at Hyderabad where i have to 5 hours break before the next flight.

Good News !!

I came back to college and in a couple of days the results of the interview are out and i am selected for the second round. The second round got postponed for 2 times and i gave the 2nd interview on the terrace of our hostel. He once again asked me my favorite subjects, i told the same as before and added one line at end which screwed me properly during my interview. The line is

"I also like Networking."

He started asking some weird networking fundas and thought its going very bad. So i told sorry sir i attended only 2 classes of networking and i don't think i know enough to answer ur questions. Thank God! he understood my problem and changed the question. Things went on fine from there, At end i messed up a bit in informal questions(Google Don't care that much for informal questions).
On my birthday around 12 noon i thought today i there is some thing nice going to come. As i expected, as soon as i opened the door of my room i got a call from Google HR that i got selected for the internship. Happy Birthday and Happy Happy Day for me.

My first Interview

Since i was not much comfortable with Algorithms that time, I prepared Algo's for the last two days. Automata, Computer Organization and Networking are my other favorite subjects. As my last minute preparation i decided to say my favorite subject as Automata, Algo's, Organisation if i was asked about that during the interview, since i thought if i say Algo's second in the list he will ask some what easy questions. I decided to say Autoamta first because i thought there nothing much for him to ask in Automata.
It started with intro session, he introduced himself, followed by my introduction. As i expected he asked me what are your favorite subject. I have told him. Thought things are going as i expected. To my surprise he asked me some high fundae Automata question which i never expected. My voice dropped taking my confidence down, i tried to answer in a low voice so that he will change to algo's, At one point of time i told i was not able to do, but he gave me clues and and encouraged me that i can do. Finally i answered it (I thought answer i gave was wrong, but it turned out to be right answer) . I am trying to explain the answer in a low voice, waiting for him to change the topic. But something unexpected happened, he said,

"We are running out of time so we can stop here. Ask me if if u have any questions"

Then i thought i lost the jackpot as i had not performed that well. I inquired others about their interviews and i thought i was out. But what happened is not the same......

An Ultimate semester...

After the exciting new year celebrations at home with my parents and family members i returned to the college on 3rd January. Even though i was back to the college all my thoughts were about the conference i was going to attend the following week at Bangalore. A great and unexpected thing happened, guess what? We got our results, I stood first in the class. It is the first time i topped in the class after i joined the college. And a memory flashed in my mind,

"When i was leaving to college, in some discussion my dad told me that 2007 will be fruitful year for everyone."

I don't know about others but for me it's great beginning for the year. That not the end for the surprise, i also got mail from Google which said,

"You have been selected for next round in Summer Internship Selection Process, Please send your Phone number for further contact."

I am flying in colors all the time for one or two days and waiting for the call from Google, HR.

Coming back to the conference, It is a great experience to me, i met lot of people, had lot of fun and lots more. Some highlights were searching for the hotel( were i was provided accommodation) at 4.30 in the morning roaming all around JC Road, MG Road and places around there. Professor Kamakoti in classical concert team at the opening ceremony of the conference, believe it or not, listening to live classical concert is so great i can't express it in words. Great research idea's of Students and Professors from around the world, again my enthu in giving a research paper went to extreme end and lots more... These experiences also include a call from HR, Google for fixing the date and time of the interview, Which turned out to be on 14th Jan ( on Pongal) and i will be at home at that time.
I had left to home on 11th january after the conference to celebrate Sankranthi( Pongal) with my parents. These two day i prepared at home seriously( Really a bad situation, Lot of relatives at home, interview in two days) . Finally the most fortunate day came and my interview supposed to start at 2 PM. I sat in one room, closed all the doors, waiting for the call, finally i got call at 2:30 PM.
With all excitement, tension(it is my first interview) i started to answer the call. To be continued...

How it all started......

One fine day in November-2006 (i guess) i got a mail which said "If you are interested in doing summer internship at Google you send the resume... ".

Let me say more about me before continuing with what happened next. By God's blessing i got an summer Internship at IITM(Indian Institute of Technology, Madras) last summer(May 2006). I have experienced a lot of things during the internship and learnt many things, if start talking about it than it will only become a whole new story which i am anyways not going to discuss now. But the impact of that Internship is it changed my mind set a lot. Ever since i came back to college after that i got lot of enthu in giving a research paper before final year. And at the mean time in the semester(5th) we will have companies coming for Interns. So a short term goal i have written in my dairy at the beginning of 5th semester goes like this

"Try to give a research paper by next semester. Don't worry about the internship if i don't get one"

With this motto i started the semester, i slagged my ass and tried to worked for my goals(though i wasted lot of time sleeping and watching movies). As semester passing on my enthu started falling about the research paper. But still used to do lot for that. As days went on and the fateful day i have mentioned in the beginning of the page arrived.
10 people from the department got the opportunity to apply for the internship(we are told selection process may have 2 or 3 elimination rounds) and i am one among them. Even you believe or not my first thought about the offer is

"I can't compete with others, but my mind says let's try, even i
don't get it, let me try to reach the second round(Even i don't go to the

second round i will have great interview experience)."

I sent my resume, celebrated rest of the day.I may or may not share my sad times with others, But i share happy times with everyone. I am waiting for the reply, in the mean while something else also happened i got a fellowship for attending a conference(VLSI Conference 2007) at Bangalore in January 2007. If i start describing about it, it's also a big story even though conference is for a duration of just 5 days. Finally 5th semester exams started,I did the exams well. Planned for a great winter vacation at the college(decided to come to college during the holidays and work and try to give a paper). But what happened is different, i went to college but what i did is sleep or play AOE (Age of Empires) or watch movie or pass time in front of my computer.
